Eventos misteriosos estão se acumulando nos oceanos ao redor do mundo: baleias destroem barcos, caranguejos de águas profundas atacam praias, mexilhões paralisam navios porta-contêineres. Um verme do gelo até então desconhecido desestabiliza encostas continentais nos oceanos e provoca tsunamis. Um patógeno mortal está se espalhando das costas na água potável. Mais e mais pessoas no mundo estão em perigo mortal. Na busca febril pelas causas dos fenômenos misteriosos, um pequeno grupo de cientistas internacionais se reúne e o antes impensável finalmente se torna uma certeza. Uma espécie até então desconhecida existe no mar e essa inteligência de enxame está atacando a humanidade. Mas quase ninguém acredita nos pesquisadores.
